What it is

THE SHORT VERSION

Each drill hands you the words of one sentence, out of order. You place them into position and the workbook grades the arrangement immediately. Where most practice stops at right-or-wrong, this one opens the reasoning: press Show Method and the same sentence is rebuilt in five steps, so you can see which decision sent you off course.

The drills are organised by grammatical pattern rather than by topic — basic word order, wh- questions, subject–verb agreement, relative clauses, gerund versus infinitive, indirect questions, modal sequences, adverb and prepositional placement. Volume 4 is a mastery set of 210 items that mixes those patterns without warning, which is closer to how a real test behaves.

The five-step method

HOW THE WORKBOOK THINKS

By meaning alone, eight words have an enormous number of possible arrangements. Fix the grammatical skeleton first and the options collapse to a handful. Every drill can be replayed through these steps.

Assign positions
Stop translating. Label each chunk as subject, verb, object, or modifier — nothing more.

Place the subject
Drop the subject chunk into the subject slot without checking whether the meaning feels right yet.

Set the verb and test transitivity
If the verb takes an object, an object slot must follow. That single question removes most wrong orders.

Slot object and modifiers
Objects first, then time and place modifiers in their conventional positions.

Verify the meaning last
Only now read it as a sentence. If the grammar was built correctly, verification takes a second.
